莱阳的历史沿革：

莱阳夏时为莱夷地；商时为莱国地；西周时为莱侯国地；东周及秦为齐郡东境。鲁襄公六年（前567年），齐国灭莱，并在莱西城区古城一带修建起一座新城池，以取代莱国对胶东地区的统治。

西晋咸宁三年（277年），观阳、昌阳并入长广县。元康八年（298年）复置昌阳县（其址在今境内昌山村南）。唐永徽元年（650年），昌阳城被水淹没，迁县治于今莱阳城。后唐同光元年（923年），庄宗李存勖为避祖名国昌，改昌阳为莱阳（即在莱山之阳，莱山为旌旗山古名）。
